Rabies Prevention Education

Overview

The Rabies prevention education program aims to reduce the incidence of rabies in Ghana through community engagement, education and promotion of timely vaccination of pets especially dogs.  This initiative focuses on creating increased awareness of the need to prevent dog bites and therefore rabies among basic school children and the importance of responsible pet especially dog and cat ownership.

Objectives

  • Increase vaccination rates among pets in targeted communities where dog and cat scratches and bites tend to increase in occurrence.
  • Educate the public on rabies prevention and responsible pet care.
  • Collaborate with the Veterinary Services Department and local health authorities to monitor and respond to dog bites and subsequent rabies cases.

Activities

  • Organize vaccination campaigns in targeted communities during World Rabies Day commemoration in September.
  • Conduct workshops and information dissemination sessions on rabies prevention with key stakeholders and target populations such as teachers, school children, parents etc.
  • Partner with the Veterinary Services Department at national, regional and district levels to ensure technical accuracy and appropriateness of rabies management information.
  • Support veterinary officials in sustaining regular vaccination of dogs and other pets.

Impact

Through our efforts, we aim to significantly reduce rabies cases, ensuring a safer environment for both humans and animals.
